Next Steps Seminar
October 12, 2010 | 5:30-7:00pm
Location: Fesler Hall (IUPUI Campus), 1120 South Dr., Ste. 302
Next Steps is a seminar in which clinicians from the Christian Sarkine Autism Treatment Center discuss general information about diagnosis, adjusting to diagnosis, and how to make appropriate treatment decisions. A comprehensive manual regarding diagnosis, treatment, rights, and family support is distributed (one per household). No direct or individual consultation on treatment decisions will be given. Additionally, since child care will not be provided, we ask that children not attend.
Next Steps is primarily designed for primary caregivers who have a child that has recently been diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. However, this seminar may also be beneficial for other caregivers, educational or therapy professionals, and other adult family members. Individuals interested in this seminar do not need to be patients of Riley Hospital to attend.

Next Steps Manual
The Next Steps manual was originally created as a written document to supplement a workshop run by the HANDS in Autism program at Riley Hospital for Children. The workshop was designed to answer the questions of caregivers whose children were recently diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Initially this manual was intended to be distributed only to families who attended the workshop. While we still encourage families to attend the workshops as a rich learning opportunity and opportunity to have questions answered, we also wish to make this information available to anyone who may benefit from it.
The manual itself is divided into 5 sections, with information about ASDs, impact on the family, rights and regulations, support options, and treatment/educational interventions. The manual is designed to serve as an all-in-one resource for families, with pages available for writing notes or organizing specific resources.
Ultimately, it is our goal to have at least one hard copy of this manual in each physician office, home, and school. Additionally, by placing this manual online, we hope that those who need the information within it will find the online version an easy and accessible way to download specific pieces of the manual or to print out additional copies as needed. We hope you will find the information within this manual helpful as you navigate the “Next Steps” after receiving an ASD diagnosis.
